This past weekend I spent at Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah GA, for the first road race of the AHRMA and eMotoRacing seasons. My challenge was competing in 2 classes on 2 different racebikes…and I do mean different!
Kowitz on his 1975 Kawasaki Z1
For the AHRMA Vintage Superbike Heavyweight season opener, my ride would be a fully modified 1975 Kawasaki Z1, 1015cc 4 cylinder fire-breathing monster. This radical old Kawasaki demands 114 octane racing fuel, a formula 1 style remote starting system, and constant supervision.
Having owned and raced this bike off and on since 1975, I am somewhat used to the antique-style chassis, no wind protection or streamlining, heavy weight, raw power delivery, and total lack of manners.
Kowitz on his Brammo Empulse TTX
In the new, leading edge Zero-Emission eMotoRacing Series I practiced and raced a 2013 Brammo Empulse TTX all electric roadracer. It is polite, sleek, uses no fossil fuel, makes no sound (!), and handles razor sharp.
Getting off one and onto the other was quite an experience…the Z1 wanted for run off the end of every straightaway like a charging rhinocerous, and the ebike was happy obeying my every whim.
I enjoyed this full throttle entertainment for 3 days, winning 4 races, then rolling home to Florida for a rest until next time.

A quarter-century later, he rode his venerable Kawasaki Z1 to the 2008 AHRMA Vintage Superbike Heavyweight Championship. In 2013, he competed on an electric Brammo Empulse TTX in the FIM eWorldCup Series at Laguna Seca Raceway and at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
